If you want to go Penn look into a Squall/Fathom 15, good all around casting reels. Reel - don't buy a Fathom 30,that's too big to cast with. We will get you set up correctly, I'll send you some pictures as well. I can help you out - getting ready to join a call for work and then I'll be able to answer all of your questions. Thanks again! I'm finding it hard to pull together information from various sources and apply it to my set up. Hoping to make the first of many fishing trips to the Outer Banks soon. In addition to leader advice, if you have any thoughts on which specific reels to pair with each rod they would be welcomed.ītw, I'm in North Carolina and mainly fish Wrightsville, Carolina, and Kure. Fast, 12-20lb Mono, 15-40lb Braid, 3/4 - 3oz lures - currently with 50lb braid - this is the rod my 11yr old son is using.thus the 9ft. Fast, 15-30lb Mono, 20-50 Braid, 2-6oz Lure - currently with 50lb braid Reel - Saltist 20/30 or Fathom 15/20 reel I'll just lay out my current line up for you. So anything you have to offer here would be great! However, I've not been very successful (perhaps I haven't found the right YouTube video:). Regarding line/shock leaders, I've started making my own 2 drop bottom leaders with 50lb flourocarbon. Do you think a 30 in either a Saltist or Fatham is too big? Currently looking for a new conventional reel and like the reviews on all of the reels you mentioned above. Thanks for the advice! I sent the Squall 30LW back last week.

Let me know if you need any advice on how to build your rigs. Next you need to get the right line/shock leader, and drum rigs.

You also need to go with a minimum 12' rod that has the ability to throw 8oz plus bait. Saltist 20/30 or Fathom 15 is where you want to be size wise. You will get no distance with a Squall 30 LW, and it will most likely blow up on you. But when I switched to them in the surf I quickly realized the butt has to be supported to get the line lay right.ĭo not use a level wind from the surf and a size 30 squall is also too big to cast with. I have used conventionals my entire life. If you are not supporting the butt, you will never lay the line well. The one thing conventionals do is force you to use a belt rod holder. It took me about half a year to reduce the mag break to zero. The conventional I cut my teeth on was the Squall 15 star drag that has a mag break on it. Using a level wind will reduce casting distance. I like being able to set the max drag where I want it and then know where to set the lever, without adjusting the star drag constantly. You also don't want it so tight that a huge fish can drag your rod down the beach.

If you are using a star drag, with just the clicker on, there isn't enough tension to set the hook. I love the lever drag because, when using circle hooks the fish hook themselves. I change rods from 10' to 12' depending on how steep the slop is and how rough the surf is. What do you think and do you have any advice? Am I on the right track with the Squall 30LW or should I get a 20LW? Perhaps there is something I'm not considering? Should I ditch the whole conventional setup if my focus is on surf fishing? There is so much information out there its hard to sort through. I've looked at the Spinfisher and the Fierce III options. Not targeting a specific fish so want something for about anything. I'm also going to purchase a spinning rod and reel to use for lures while my conventional sits in the rod holder.

My plan is to use this rod and reel set to cast live bait past the breakers and place it into rod holder. I chose this reel because I thought I would need a LW as a conventional reel beginner however I did look at the Squall Star Drag as well (I don't mind taking the time to learn to use conventional reels).

Reasons cited include, weight, LW which hinders casting distance, designed for trolling, etc. However, I came across several articles saying the SQ元0LW is not the best choice for casting/surf fishing. I recently bought a Penn Squall 30LW and paired it with a Penn Battalion II, 10ft, 15-30lb medium heavy. I'm now looking to get into it primarily fishing the NC coast and Outer Banks. Although I fished saltwater when younger, I have not surf fished much at all. Hoping someone can help me sort through some thoughts.
